Mateu Alemany has decided to swap Barcelona for Aston Villa. The sporting director will leave the La Liga side after June 30th, but won’t have a major say in any of their business and will act as a consultant until then.

That’s according to AS, who state the 60-year-old has started to work behind the scenes to shape up Unai Emery’s squad even though his move to Villa Park hasn’t been made official yet.

Aston Villa’s owners are aiming to be one of the best clubs in England, which is why they have decided to bet on the Spaniard. To achieve this ambitious goal, the incoming chief will be handed a big budget to bring in new players in the summer.

Alemany has identified Villarreal star Álex Baena, Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio and Barcelona’s Ferran Torres as the first three targets for the Villans. It’s claimed ‘all three already know of the interest’ from the English club.

Emery knows Baena from his time at Villarreal and it was the current Aston Villa coach who gave him an opportunity at the Spanish club earlier this season.

The 21-year-old winger has 10 goals and six assists this season. Earlier this year, he was rewarded with a new deal until 2028.

Asensio has a deal expiring in June and has had a renewal offer on the table for months. Real Madrid haven’t received the 27-year-old’s approval since he wants to know the importance he’ll have at the club next season. The forward wants more game time.

Torres, on the other hand, hasn’t convinced Barca this season and will be made available in the market. AS state there would be no problem for the 23-year-old attacker to join Aston Villa and contacts have already taken place for a potential summer deal.
