One person unlikely to hold much blame in the whole Tottenham/Espanyol Pau Lopez mess is the player himself.
The 22 year old moved to Tottenham in good faith last summer probably feeling they’d use the €7m buying option as long as he further impressed Mauricio Pochettino and the club’s coaches.
That was always the plan as far as Pau has been concerned.
Over the past few weeks the disagreement on fee between Tottenham and Espanyol has come to a head, and whilst it seems that Spurs are the ones trying to force a positive decision out of the Spanish club, they’re not doing so with public pressure from Pau.
Keeping calm and not wanting to get into any kind of transfer war, Pau has made it clear he’s content with whatever happens this summer, whether that means continuing at Tottenham or going back to Espanyol, the club where he came through the ranks.
Currently away with Spain’s U21 side, Pau continues to sound focused and without stress. In fact, the youngster couldn’t sound happier, telling Marca: “Being able to play a Euros game is something you don’t get every day. This season has been an experience in every way. I have become better as a goalkeeper, it all adds up.”
Tottenham now have 7 days to decide whether it all adds up to make Espanyol an offer which isn’t going to insult them.
It may be worth it for Spurs to do if only to keep Pochettino happy, the Tottenham manager still has a lot of feelings for Espanyol and probably won’t be thrilled to see how things have gone.
