Serie A side Napoli are reportedly set to make an offer for the Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.
The exclusive claim is made by WebCalcio.Net today, who says the Italian club are keen on offering £18m for the 22-year-old.
The website claims that Napoli already tried to sign the player last year, when he was leaving Anderlecht, but his personal decision made him go to Newcastle instead.
One of the reasons why Mitrovic joined the Magpies was because he’d have more game time than at Napoli. But as Gonzalo Higuain has now left, it’s assumed that there’d be more opportunities.
Napoli would also be counting on convincing the player he could play in the Champions League and also challenge for the title, something he won’t do in England so soon.
Rafa Benítez is said to be totally against the transfer, and he’d be especially reluctant to sell to Napoli. The Spanish manager had a rocky exit from Napoli, and he’s hardly going to want to help them.
Newcastle paid €18.5m for Mitrovic, and he quickly went about becoming a cult hero. With goals now matching that status, it’s got to be considered unlikely Newcastle would sell in January.
