Already winning the Champions League in his first season at Chelsea, Edouard Mendy has now won the Africa Cup of Nations.
The goalkeeper, widely seen as one of the best in his role these days, was in the net for Senegal throughout the competition, with his country eventually lifting the trophy after a tense final against Egypt.
They won on penalties, and the Chelsea man, clearly delighted at his and his team’s achievement, spoke to RFI after the win, where he made a rather surprising claim.
He said, relayed by RMC Sport: “It’s 10 times better than the Champions League. Incomparable. I’ve never had goosebumps like this!”
The 29-year-old missed the first two games of the competition because of Covid-19, but returned to his role for the final game of the Group Stages against Malawi.
He then went on to concede just two goals in the knockout stages, in the quarter finals and the semis against Equatorial Guinea and Burkina Faso, before keeping a clean sheet in the final.
He has now returned to his Chelsea teammates, who are currently in the Club World Cup, as they beat Al-Hilal on Wednesday afternoon to face Palmeiras in the final.
Kepa Arrizabalaga started that game, and it remains to be seen whether the Spaniard will be in the Blues net to face the Brazilian side on Saturday.
