There’s something of a post-mortem going on right now regarding Newcastle United’s failed attempt to make Unai Emery their manager.
After sections of the UK media had been so sure the Spaniard would imminently be arriving at the Magpies, presumably having been encouraged to believe that by the club, attention now turns to what went wrong.
Similar is happening in Spain too, albeit from a different perspective. El Periódico Mediterráneo is the newspaper local to Villarreal, and they again take a calm look at the situation.
It’s explained that Newcastle offered Emery ’10 million Euros net’ to become their new manager, although there’s no clarity over what timeframe that money covered.
The former Arsenal boss isn’t escaping blame, and the newspaper certainly isn’t in all-out-attack against Newcastle United, that doesn’t seem to be their concern right now. It’s explained Emery didn’t handle himself well in front of the media, was poor in his communication, and was perhaps too frank when speaking about interest from the Premier League club.
This has quickly been forgiven, and his statement on Wednesday, in which he insisted Villarreal is his home and he’s fully committed, will certainly have helped.
Nobody comes out of this looking good, perhaps other than Villarreal, who have been calm in their responses so far.
